American snowboarder Shaun White, who became the face of the sport after winning three gold medals, said on Saturday that the 2022 Winter Olympics will be his last snowboarding event and he will retire from all competitions.

“I think this will be mine, this will also be my last competition, which is very special,” White, 35, told a news conference.

White, competing in his fifth Games, had already said that the 2022 Olympics would be his last appearance on the podium.

White, who won halfpipe gold at the 2006, 2010 and 2018 Games, said knee and back problems remained, forcing him to miss competitions and miss training.

“It is this and that, all these things are the major things that bring me to this conclusion,” he said, adding that the moves of the other riders were getting “heavier and heavier”.

Shaun White has confirmed that the Beijing 2022 Games will be his last snowboard event.

“This will be my last competition, which is very special,” the American told media, including Olympic.com, on Saturday (February 5) in Zhangjiakou, China.

White also insists he has nothing left to prove, as he prepares to compete in his fifth and final Olympics for Team USA.

The 35-year-old had previously told Olympics.com that it would be his last game, but Saturday’s announcement confirms his retirement from the sport this month.
