Kiwi and Sharks halfback Shawn Johnson has penned a tearful tribute to his wife and former Silver Ferns star Kayla Johnson (née Cullen). The former Warriors star took out the Porter Gallen Medal for Player of the Year at Sharks 2020 Awards Night.
Johnson was inspired on the subject of his young family and immediately burst into tears when it came to his wife and former Silver Ferns star Kayla.
The couple welcomed their daughter Milah into the world in August. The Kiwi halfback parted ways with the Warriors at the end of the 2018 season and was soon joined by the Sharks.
He still had a year to run on his contract, but when it became clear he would not be extended into the 2020 season with the Warriors, he asked for a release.
Johnson said he has never been happier in his career, but refused to buy into former Sharks Brett Kimorley in a pinch that the Warriors were mad enough to force the star to leave the club.
Broncos
Kiwi halfback Shaun Johnson is widely seen as a key Brisbane Broncos signing for next year’s NRL.
Johnson will be out of contract at the Cronulla Sharks at the end of the current season and has been pegged by a host of Australian media organizations as the main target of the struggling Broncos.
Brisbane coach Kevin Walters confirmed on Monday that playmaker Tom Dearden will not be with the club next year, opting instead to join the North Queensland Cowboys.
“Obviously we are disappointed but we have clear priorities as to who we are targeting to strengthen our roster,” Walters said.
Johnson, 30, made his first appearance for the Sharks last weekend after an Achilles injury and played 63 minutes but couldn’t stop his team from being troubled by the lowly Canterbury Bulldogs.
The Broncos, who also let star youngster Reece Walsh join the NZ Warriors, share the bottom spot on the league ladder with the Bulldogs and West Tigers with only one win out of seven games.

Cowboys
Cronulla won Saturday night’s game in Townsville but the club’s $1 million playmaker is once again at the gun.
Shawn Johnson had two assists and 51 running meters in his 26-16 upset win over the Cowboys.
But it appears the performance has done nothing to convince rugby league great and Fox League analyst Cooper Cronk that the Kiwi playmaker has justified his price tag since moving to the Shire.
Johnson left the Warriors last year and joined the Sharks on a three-year deal worth $3 million according to reports at the time.
He is a New Zealand star and Golden Boot winner, but his form in the NRL has always been criticized for being inconsistent at best.
He is known for flashes of talent, but his game management and smart as a halfback leave much to be desired, and Saturday night Cronk saw more relatable signs.
