Four more match points came and went, as Williams kept coming up with world-class groundstrokes as if she were playing at her peak. And yet, to Tomljanovic’s credit, he held his nerve in the face of the loudest cheer ever at this stadium.

Eventually, in the sixth time of the asking, Williams put one last forehand into the net and the contest ended with a score of 7–5, 6–7, 6–1. This was the first time she had gone past the three hours at the US Open, although the 3 hour 5 minute period lasted 3 hours 11 minutes against Tan at Wimbledon.

The level of opposition and match was much higher on Center Court than it was during that memorable night. While Tomljanovic’s ranking may be unpredictable, at number 46 in the world, he is an unusually clean ball-striker who delivers a heavy punch from both wings.

Despite a rough period at the start of the second set, when an inspired Williams went out for a 4-0 lead, Tomljanovic made sure the contest was fully physical. Gradually, it eroded Williams’ endurance and took advantage of the 11-year age difference.

The numbers could never have done a career symbolizing such absolute justice, but they do help us sit back and wonder what Serena has been able to achieve since she took the field running on the Tour in 1997.

For each of the 23 Grand Slam titles she took home, let’s count the 23 spectacular Serena Williams stats, by the numbers…

1: Williams has held the WTA’s No. 1 ranking for 319 weeks, including 186 weeks in a row, tied with Steffi Graf for the longest streak among women.

2: In 1999, Williams became the second black woman to win a Grand Slam singles title, and at the 1958 US Open legend Althea Gibson won her fifth and final major singles title.

3: Number of Roland Garros singles titles claimed by Williams, who won titles in 2002, 2013 and 2015 and set a lifetime record of 69–14 in Paris.

4: Number of Olympic gold medals Williams has won. She won three doubles gold medals with sister Venus Williams at the 2000 Sydney Games, the 2008 Beijing Games and the 2012 London Games, and also added a singles gold medal in London in 2012.

5: Williams claimed the coveted title in the WTA’s season-ending championship five times. In 2014 she became the oldest champion in tournament history at the age of 33.

While cheering on wife Serena Williams at the US Open on Friday, the Reddit co-founder wore a shirt featuring the faces of the pair’s 5-year-old daughter. Ohanian, 39, accessorised the tee with a black jacket.

The image of Olympia featured on the shirt was a photo of her from earlier in the week, showing her support for her mother as she began attending the US Open on Monday.

Olympia was absent during Williams’ final match on Friday, when the 40-year-old tennis icon lost to Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic after three intense sets.

Earlier in the week, Olympia wore a matching outfit with Williams in the stands. Total was seen wearing a black Nike dress that dazzled with mini rhinestones on top, a smaller replica of the same piece that Williams wore.

Olympia’s hair was also a salute to a milestone moment for her mother. Olympia wore a string of white pearls under her ponytail, which is reminiscent of Williams when she made her first U.S. event in 1999. Won the Open.
