Dad alive

Richard Williams, father of Venus Williams and Serena Williams, has been in the limelight for the past few months after the release of the film King Richard.

The film shows how Richard Williams trained Venus and Serena Williams into two of the greatest tennis players of all time.

“It was his idea. He knew how to do it. What does this African American man tell us to engage in a sport where there aren’t many African American players? There was no other way to tell that story” – Why Serena Williams?

Last match

Tennis legend Serena Williams has been ruled out of the US Open 2022, which could be her last match on a court. She went down to Ajla Tomljanovic 7-5, 6-7, 6-1 in the third round of women’s singles on Friday. The tennis star had announced that this would be her last singles match at the US Open and that she was retiring from the sport. After losing her swansong match, she burst into tears, waving to the home crowd.

Serena retired after 92 matches at the Australian Open, 69 at the French Open, 98 at the prestigious Wimbledon and 108 wins at her home Grand Slam US Open. She has won a record total of 23 Grand Slam titles.

Legend broke down after the match. She said, “Oh my god! Thank you so much. You guys were amazing today. Thanks dad, I know you’re looking. Thanks mom. It all started with my parents and I’m so grateful for them.” These are happy tears. If Venus wasn’t there, I wouldn’t be Serena.”

“It’s been the most incredible ride and journey I’ve ever had in my life,” Williams said, tears rolling down her cheeks shortly after a final shot.

But Serena’s biggest victory was when she became a mother in 2017 when, during a TED talk with Gelking, she revealed that she found out about her pregnancy just two days before the 2017 Australian Open started. “I was terrified,” Williams said. “I wasn’t quite sure what to think, but I knew that at the time, it was really important for me to just focus.”

She continued, “It wasn’t very easy. You’ve heard all these stories about people getting pregnant—they get sick, they get really tired, really stressed….” Whatever he did, he worked; Williams not only won that Australian Open, but she did so by defeating sister Venus in the final!

Caught off guard as Williams was from her pregnancy, she later threw the world—and herself for a loop—when she accidentally uploaded her baby bump to Snapchat in April 2017, without any meaning. Let’s announce your pregnancy!
