Cause of death
Sean Burroughs, a Little League World Series winner, 2000 Olympic gold medalist and first-round pick in the MLB draft, has died at the age of 43.
California-based Long Beach Little League said in a statement posted on Instagram that Burroughs “tragically passed away” Thursday afternoon. His mother Debbie told the Southern California News Group that the cause of death was cardiac arrest.
According to Long Beach Little League President Doug Wittman, Burroughs was found unconscious next to his car in the parking lot of a Long Beach ballfield after dropping his son Knox off at a Little League game.
Wittman said CPR was performed on Burroughs in hopes of reviving him, but he was unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.
Drugs
Sean Burroughs played baseball well enough to lead his Long Beach Little League team to a World Series championship, win a gold medal with the United States Olympic team, and begin his professional career as a Padres draftee at age 17.
But it wasn’t something Burroughs did with a baseball bat that was the highest of his publicly known successes.
Burroughs, who died Thursday of a heart attack at age 43, overcame a drug addiction that led the former Padres third baseman from 2008-10 to what he described as a hallucination-filled, dystopian existence .
He told the Union-Tribune in 2011 that while scavenging trash cans for food and moving from one dirty Las Vegas motel to another, Burroughs could have died if family members, substance-abusing staff members and him There would have been no other people to save.
