There’s been a lot of talk lately about the Rookie of the Year award, and who deserves it. In most years the prize is usually given to the player with the most points. Those numbers are hard to see for first-year players because most of them are on rebuilding teams that allow them to take enough shots to put in a large number. We’ve certainly seen that in some cases this season – think Cade Cunningham’s position in Detroit, or Jalen Greene’s position in Houston. The guys are both first and second in points per game among rookies, and in Cade’s case, should be mentioned in the conversation for Rookie of the Year.
But if we’re just ranking the top three rookies in the class this season, Cunningham will be behind both Evan Mobley and Scotty Barnes. Those two players have the best argument for Rookie of the Year right now. Not only do they have the numbers – Barnes averages 15.3/7.6/3.4 and Mobley averages 15.1/8.3/2.6 – but they have both been consistent throughout the season and have had a great impact on winning teams. I can’t tell you who I’ll vote for right now, because as impressive as Mobley has been on defense throughout the season and watching his offensive game develop, Barnes has been as good on defense, a devastating ball on offense and He has several roles to fill for the Raptors this season. At one point in the season it felt like Mobley would run away with the prize, but Barnes has pretty much closed that gap to the point where I don’t think there’s a wrong choice with winning it.

Dunk
Toronto Raptors rookie was not going to start criticizing the referee despite a very suspicious foul call in the middle of the fourth quarter after Monday night’s game against the Miami Heat.
Barnes, who pulled his feet out from under him, hit him in the face, and then got stoked on a fastbreak dunk by Caleb Martin, said after the game that he agreed with the referee that the play was a common foul.
“I feel like it was a hustle game,” said the 20-year-old forward. “He tried to get the ball but I would just say he was running too fast and couldn’t really control himself in that position. I don’t think it was a major one.”
Barnes’s primary concern after the game was the well-being of the woman he fell in the first row.
He tweeted Tuesday morning, “Whoever be this lady in the stands, I hope you’re all right.”
