Toronto Raptors rookie Scotty Barnes is in doubt for Game 4 of the team’s playoff series against the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday as he continues to recover from an ankle injury, coach Nick Nurse said Friday.

Barnes was hurt in Game 1. He was on triple double pace, with 15 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists, when Sixers center Joel Embiid stepped on his ankle, crashing him to the floor with almost nine minutes to play. ,

Barnes has been without it since he wore the walking boot two days after the injury.

Barnes’ presence will be a huge boost for Toronto as the Raptors go 3-0 down in the series.

Barnes, who averages 15.3 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in a game in the regular season, can play in almost any position.

The Toronto Raptors could use a reinforcement when they face the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday for Game 4 of the first-round playoff series.

Unfortunately for them, their wish may not come true. As the Raptors lost their accomplished young rookie Scotty Barnes in the fourth quarter in a Game 1 matchup on the road against the Sixers, he wasn’t sure whether he’d get the big man back at some point during the series.

Barnes was in a lot of pain the first time he got hurt. As he needed help back in the locker room, Toronto wasted no time in ruling Barnes off for the rest of the night. While an initial X-ray was negative, Barnes was scheduled for an MRI the next morning.

The Raptors kept Barnes’ diagnosis quiet, potentially for strategic purposes. But it was clear that Barnes’ injury was not minor at all, given that he was sporting a walking boot prior to Game 2. After being listed as suspicious for Game 2 versus Philly, Barnes was kicked out.

Barnes, who missed games 2 and 3 after spraining the opener’s ankle, returned to the game on Saturday afternoon. The Rookie of the Year didn’t look like his normal self, especially at the aggressive end of the floor, where he wasn’t very aggressive. But only having Barnes on the floor was a big deal for the Raptors, especially on the defensive. He is usually called upon to defend James Harden, which means Toronto will have some shape when they switch up the two-man action between Harden and Joel Embiid. This may not be enough to make Barnes a viable DFS option due to offensive boundaries, but he does improve the Raptors’ chances of winning.

Scotty Barnes has won the 2021-22 NBA Rookie of the Year award which will be available to play in Game 3 against the 76ers on Saturday.
Barnes boiled Evan Mobley down to a two-man contest for the award. He joins Damon Stoudamayr and Vince Carter on the list of Raptors winning ROY. Shortly after his win was announced, we learned that Barnes would be available for Game 4. Expect them to play with Philly in a win-or-home contest without restrictions.
