SCCA traces its roots to the Automobile Racing Club of America (not to be confused with the current stock car series of the same name). ARCA was founded in 1933 by brothers Miles and Sam Collier, and was dissolved in 1941 at the outbreak of World War II. The SCCA was formed as an enthusiast group in 1944. The SCCA began sanctioning road racing with the opening of the Watkins Glen Grand Prix in 1948. SCCA member and local enthusiast Cameron Argetinger, who later became Director of Pro Racing and Executive Director of SCCA, helped organize events for SCCA.

Runoffs 2021
No aspect of the Summit Racing Equipment SCCA road racing program would have happened without the hard work of volunteer workers handling aspects ranging from event operations through technical oversight. Each year, a select few are recognized as the SCCA Worker of the Year presented by Mazda.
The Worker of the Year awards were presented Thursday night during an all-participant dinner at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as part of the SCCA runoff. Each of the nine honorees, coming from each aspect of road racing workers, receives a commemorative plaque, patch and jacket, as well as an SCCA Gear merchandise gift certificate.
“We have over 850 racers this year and over 430 employees with us,” said road racing director Deanna Flanagan. “Since 1944, SCCA has existed to provide a place for auto enthusiasts and motorsports fans to come together and enjoy our shared passion. We have heard stories and witnessed selfless acts of sportsmanship and teamwork. Last night, at the block party, we as a SCCA family had drivers, workers, crew, family, friends from all walks of life. To all the workers, thank you for your dedication, commitment and support to this event and our members. Thank you.”
Runoffs 2021 Schedule
One of the most anticipated days of the opening season has arrived for SCCA road racers, as participants in the 2021 SCCA National Championship runoff now know which day they will run for the National Championship and can see the event logo for the first time.
The 2021 schedule features three days of qualifying and three days of racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, beginning Tuesday, September 28, and running through Sunday, October 3.
The qualifying schedule and run groups will be tentative until weeks after registration opens to ensure a suitable breakout of the session, but each of the 26 runoff-qualified classes will have an 18-minute qualifying session each day, using a follow-up approach. Instead of running at a fixed time.
Runoffs result
Ohio native Ryan Norman of Aurora started the day on a high note, winning the first race of the morning in the Formula Atlantic class. After repeatedly setting a new track record for fastest lap time by a SCCA driver throughout the week, Norman took the win by leading all 23 laps, breaking Graham Rahal’s previous record by 1.68 seconds on Thursday.
Norman’s win was the only trip to the winning circle for the Ohio drivers on Sunday. Ohio had six drivers in the F production race, but none made it to the podium. Reynoldsburg’s Mason Workman, the best of half a dozen drivers, finished seventh.
Scott Ritich of Columbus, who took victory in Friday’s Formula Enterprise race, was one of the favorites in the highly competitive spec racer Ford Gen 3 race, but several cars making contact drove him off the course on the opening lap. He finished 11th out of 40 competing cars.
Sunday marked the end of major events in Mid-Ohio for the remainder of 2016. And while the track’s 2017 season will see the return of IndyCar (July 30) and NASCAR Xfinity Series (August 12) races, Runoff will not return next year. Instead they will take place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway from September 25 to October 1.
