Schultz’s family said, “balancing the demands of athletics, academics and everyday life overwhelmed her in a single, desperate moment.”
“Like you, we are stunned and stricken with grief holding on tightly to all that Sarah was.”
The California-born runner was a member of the cross country, indoor track and outdoor track teams at the University of Wisconsin.
Wisconsin officials released a statement over the weekend about the beloved student, who was described as a gentle soul and graceful student-athlete.
Schultz’s family speaks after his suicide as they were shocked by his death. On 13 April, her family confirmed the death statement and made it public.
In his memory, Schultz’s family started a foundation to help athletes in need. In an interview, his family said that it was difficult to balance the demands of academics, athletics and everyday life.
According to her family’s statement, the late student-athlete had begun to develop a passion for politics, women’s rights and social causes after interning at the university.
His family was deeply shocked by the news of suicide.

In 2018, he was named Ventura County Athlete of the Year and earned a scholarship to the University of Wisconsin.
Family members said she was an intern in the Wisconsin legislature and volunteered as a polling worker during the 2020 presidential election.
“These experiences helped develop her deep love for politics, social causes and women’s rights,” her family said.
“Sarah regarded herself as a champion for all women, as did the many family members, friends, students, and athletes who surrounded her.”
The family has since announced that they are starting the ‘Sarah Schultz Foundation’, a charity to support women’s rights, student athletes and mental health – “the most important cause for our Sarah.”
“We thank you for respecting the privacy of our family during this time,” the family said.
“We also thank you for your love and strength as we all mourn this unexpected and immeasurable loss.”

Sarah was a deeply committed friend who could be counted on to take on any adventure at a moment’s notice. Some of Sarah’s favorite adventures include Europe, Africa, Alaska, and the U.S. There were trips to other parts of the U.S., which were shared with family and friends.
