Samuel Benjamin Watkins IV (born June 14, 1993) is an American football wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Clemson and was drafted fourth overall by the Buffalo Bills in the 2014 NFL Draft. He has also played for the Los Angeles Rams, Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens. Watkins became a Super Bowl champion as a member of the Chiefs.

Watkins has been termed by many as an injured player. During his seven-year career, he has played only 16 games in a season – which was his rookie season in 2014. Since then, their games have been played in the order: 13, 8, 15, 10, 14, and 10.

Well, it’s actually caused by repeated minor and nagging injuries as opposed to major shocks, like a torn ACL for example. Today Adams is playing for Las Vegas. And on Thursday, the Packers signed Watkins to help fill the cavernous void Adams left behind.

“He’s fine, but he’s not the kind of guy he was coming out of Clemson,” an AFC scout texted me after signing. “It would be best if he is your number 3 (receiver) right now. You don’t want him as your (number) 2.”

Sammy Watkins signed a one-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens on April 2, 2021. The contract is fully guaranteed for $5 million which includes a $3.75 million signing bonus.

Watkins had just 27 receptions for 394 yards (14.6 average) and one touchdown in Baltimore the year before. In 2020, Watkins caught two TDs with 37 passes and heads for 421 yards (11.4 average).
“He’s on the downside,” said Scout. “there’s no doubt about it.”
Watkins also played with the Rams in 2017 when current Packers head coach Matt LaFleur was the offensive coordinator. That season, Watkins had 39 receptions for 593 yards and eight touchdowns, but was dismayed by his role in an offense including Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, Tavon Austin and Todd Gurley.

Although he did not participate in spring practice, Watkins made an immediate impact for Clemson in his freshman season in 2011 He caught 82 passes for 1219 yards and 12 touchdowns in his first collegiate season, including 10 catches, 155 yards and two touchdowns against the defending national champion Auburn Tigers. He also led the nation in reception yards, all-purpose yards, and touchdowns per game. He also broke the 11 school freshman record seven games in a season, first with C.J. Spiller. Watkins was an AP first-team All-American, becoming only the fourth true freshman to do so, joining Herschel Walker, Marshall Faulk, and Adrian Peterson. He was also named a Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America.
As a sophomore in 2012, he had 57 receptions for 708 yards and three touchdowns. As a junior, he had 101 receptions for 1,464 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was the MVP of the 2014 Orange Bowl after setting an Orange Bowl record with 16 receptions for 227 yards against the Ohio State Buckeyes. He also set the school record for career reception finishing games with 240.
In January 2014, Watkins announced that he would be leaving his senior season and entered the 2014 NFL Draft.
