Stats
Niku, a defenseman from Haapavesi, Finland, made his debut in Liiga, Finland’s top pro league, in 2014-15, then was selected by the Winnipeg Jets in the seventh round (No. 198) in the 2015 NHL Draft.
He remained in Finland for one more season, finishing with 27 points (five goals, 22 assists) in 59 games for JYP before signing a three-year, entry-level contract with the Jets on May 25, 2017. Niku spent most of the 2017-18 season with Manitoba of the American Hockey League, but was called up by the Jets on April 1, 2018, and scored a goal against the Montreal Canadiens in his NHL debut two days later. After the season, he was named the AHL’s top defenseman and earned First-Team All-Star honors.
Trade
Just over a couple of days ago, the Winnipeg Jets announced that they re-signed restricted free agent Sami Niku on a two year extension. His new deal carries an average annual value of $725,000 over the next two seasons.
Before Niku extended his contract with the Winnipeg Jets, there was a good amount of speculation involving the twenty-four year old. There were some rumors that said Niku requested a trade from the Jets, but Niku’s agent said that was not the truth and his client wanted to stay in Winnipeg.
Injury
Niku has had terrible luck with injuries this season and will miss at least a couple of weeks with a lower-body issue. With Niku out, Nelson Nogier has been recalled from Manitoba (AHL).
Draft
Two days before Winnipeg Jets players report for medicals Wednesday for the opening of Main Training Camp, the hockey club and Sami Niku are parting ways.
As a result of this move, the Jets will take Niku’s US$725,000 off the books, which will get them just under the salary cap ceiling of US$81.5 Million once they tap into Bryan Little’s $US5.29 Million in LTIR funds. Even before the trade acquisitions of Brenden Dillon and Nate Schmidt this past off-season, Niku had slipped further down the Winnipeg depth chart on defense, passed by the likes of Logan Stanley, Ville Heinola and Dylan Samberg.
Wife
He is currently single. He is not dating anyone. We don’t have much information about He’s past relationship and any previous engaged. According to our Database, He has no children.
Contract
The Winnipeg Jets placed defenceman Sami Niku on unconditional waivers Monday for the purposes of contract termination. Niku had one season remaining on a two-year deal with an average annual value of $725,000.
