Korean flag helmet
Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell is one-quarter Korean. He proudly honors his Korean heritage by wearing a South Korean flag decal on his helmet. Howell’s grandmother, Han Howell, was Korean and played an important role in his life. The NFL Heritage Program allows players to represent their international background through flag stickers.
Helmet flag
Howell wears a South Korean flag on his Commanders helmet as the NFL encourages players to honor their heritage this season.
The 14 Commanders players are part of the NFL’s Legacy Initiative, representing countries around the world.
Howell is not the only player to represent South Korea in the league. Murray also has Korean heritage, while Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton and Falcons kicker Youngho Koo were among the players who have displayed a Korean flag decal.
Like Howell and Murray, Hamilton’s Korean heritage is a part of his background. Koo, on the other hand, was born in South Korea and moved to the United States as a child.
Heritage
Last August, Han Howell was in Seoul, South Korea to see his favorite football player in action.
“For the preseason games, she actually went on a trip to Korea, which was the last time,” Sam Howell said. “Apparently the time change is big, and she used to tell me she would stay up all night to watch me play.”
Unfortunately, these were the only gameday snaps he got to see his grandson play for the Commanders, as he passed away in November 2022. Grief-stricken since her passing, Sam realizes that his grandmother’s death has caused a major crisis. A variety of reflection and interest on their Asian heritage.
