Sam Howell college

Howell is the first quarterback drafted by Washington since Dwayne Haskins Jr. in 2019. He is the 54th quarterback drafted in franchise history and the 21st quarterback to be selected in the fifth round or later. He is the first quarterback selected by Washington from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Howell started 12 games and recorded 217 completions for 3,056 yards, 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions his junior year in 2021. He added 183 carries for 828 yards and 11 rushing touchdowns. Howell was named the preseason ACC Player of the Year, All-ACC Honorable Mention and a Davey O’Brien Award Great 8 selection.

In his sophomore season, he started 12 games while recording 237 completions for 3,587 yards, 30 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Howell was named a 2020 Manning Award finalist, 2020 Davey O’Brien Award semifinalist, and 2020 All-ACC Second Team.

Howell set the North Carolina high school record with 17,036 offensive yards during his career at Sun Valley and was second with 13,145 passing yards. He initially committed to Florida State, but UNC head coach Mack Brown convinced the nationally ranked four-star, top-100 recruit to stay in his home state. Howell played immediately for the Tar Heels, starting all 13 games in 2019 to earn ACC Rookie of the Year and third team All-ACC honors. That season, he was fourth in FBS with 38 touchdown passes and 10th in passing efficiency (259-of-422, 61.4%, 3,641 yards, seven INTs; one rushing TD) and was named Military Bowl Most Valuable Player (25-) was named. He was a second-team All-ACC pick and Manning Award finalist in 2020, ranking fourth in FBS with 3,586 passing yards, fourth with 15.1 yards per completion, sixth with 30 passing touchdowns and eighth in passing efficiency (237- 438), 68.1%, seven INTs in 12 starts). Howell struggled a bit in 2021 after losing several offensive playmakers to the NFL, but still received honorable mention and ranked ninth in the FBS with 324 yards of total offense per game as a dual-threat (217-347- 62.5, 3,056 yards, 24 TDs), nine INT passing; 183–828–4.5, 11 rushing TDs in 12 starts). He had three games with 300 yards passing and 100 yards rushing, behind only Lamar Jackson’s four such contests in the previous 25 seasons, and he led UNC for passing yards, passing touchdowns and total offense while throwing touchdowns in all 37 games. 

Salary

Sam Howell committed to a four-year, $4,021,600 deal with the Washington Commanders that included a $361,600 signing bonus, $361,600 in guaranteed money and an average annual salary of $1,005,400. Howell’s base salary for 2023 will be $870,000, with a ceiling of $960,400 and a maximum salary of $271,200.
