Sam Richard Darnold is an American football quarterback for the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League. He played college football at USC and was selected third overall by the New York Jets in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Sam Darnold may not be Michael Vick, but the Panthers quarterback has set an NFL record that not even Vick could match.
On an 11-yard touchdown run during the first half of Sunday’s game against the Cowboys, Darnold became the first quarterback in league history to rush for five touchdowns during his team’s first four games. Darnold also scored on a one-yard touchdown run earlier in the game.

Darnold was a two-sport athlete at San Clemente High School, playing football and basketball. Considered a four-star recruit by Rivals.com, he was recruited to USC and joined the football team.
After redshirting his freshman year in 2015, he served as the second-string quarterback in 2016 before being named the starter after three games.
NFL:
Darnold was selected by the New York Jets in the first round, with the third overall selection, of the 2018 NFL Draft. On July 30, 2018, Darnold signed a four-year deal worth $30.25 million fully guaranteed featuring a $20 million signing bonus with the Jets.
Darnold made his professional debut on August 10, in the first preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons, where he finished with 96 passing yards and a touchdown as the Jets won 17–0.

Five quarterbacks were selected in the first round — Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, Josh Rosen, and Lamar Jackson — the second highest number of first-round quarterback selections (tied with the 1999 and 2021 drafts) after the six selected in 1983.

The third pick of the 2018 draft threw for 234 yards in the first half, 16 more than in any first half in his previous three seasons in New York. That included a 57-yard touchdown to former Jets receiver Robby Anderson, his favorite target in 2018-19.
Darnold also ran for a 5-yard touchdown on a quarterback draw late in the first half to give Carolina a 16-0 lead.
