Samuel Richard Darnold (born June 5, 1997)[1] is an American football quarterback for the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at USC, where he won the 2017 Rose Bowl as a freshman, and was selected third overall by the New York Jets in the 2018 NFL Draft. At 21, he was the youngest starting quarterback of the NFL since the AFL–NFL merger. Darnold served as the Jets’ starter from 2018 to 2020, until being traded to the Panthers in 2021.

Contract trade
3 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Jets signed him to a four-year contract with $30.2 million guaranteed. Darnold’s contract included a signing bonus of $20 million, $2.72 million in basic pay and $7.71 million in roster bonuses. Those roster bonuses are fully guaranteed and paid on the fifth day of training camp in 2019, 2020 and 2021.
After Darnold was traded to the Panthers, Carolina opted for his fifth year. Darnold played more than 75% of his snaps with the Jets in all three seasons, becoming eligible for the third-highest pay level. Therefore, Darnold’s salary cap number for 2022 has been set at $18.858 million — all in the form of a fully guaranteed base salary.
