Injury video
There was a terrifying scene at the start of Sunday’s game between the Detroit Lions and New England Patriots. Lions safety Savian Smith is down with an injury that required an on-field ambulance to take him off the field. Smith’s family members came out of the stands to ride in the ambulance as Lions Safety was escorted off the field.
It is not clear what exactly happened in the play. Smith was lined up opposite tight end hunter Henry, and the two were locked in a physical rep. But soon after, Smith fell to the floor.
Smith was making his second career NFL debut—the first time since 2020—that Detroit made the surprising choice to bench DeShawn Elliott.

When DeShawn Elliott watched an ambulance drive onto the field at Gillette Stadium, a shot of fear ran through his body.
Detroit Lions safety Savian Smith fainted in the first quarter of Sunday’s 29-0 loss to the New England Patriots when he collided with Patriots tight end Hunter Henry.
Smith lay on the ground as players, coaches and personnel from both teams gathered around him near the Patriots’ 40-yard line. A Patriots player immediately knelt on the far side of the field, and a coach ran across the field with a backboard.
“When the car came out and it wasn’t moving, I was scared,” Elliot said. “Like, ‘Dang, what’s up?’ Hope he’s okay. It’s just a game of football. I saw one thing that Joe Burrow said a few days ago, like, when you play this game, things are going to happen. You just hope That it’s not you. We have to keep going. I’m sure he’s going to fight back and get better when he gets better.”
Smith was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where he was evaluated for a neck injury. On Sunday he was released with movement in all extremes and traveled home with the team.
The 24-year-old defensive back made his Lions debut on Sunday as a replacement for Elliott, a day after he was promoted from the practice team to the GameDay roster.

“He’s got full motor skills,” head coach Dan Campbell said after the game. “So we’re going to try to get him back on the plane so he can come home. That’s good news.”
Smith was actually discharged from the hospital, although it is unclear whether he made the home visit with the team. He penned a positive message on Twitter to former Patriots LB and Alabama teammate Mack Wilson on Sunday night.
