A popular Youth Tour supporter claimed his first PGA Tour victory at the WM Phoenix Open on Sunday. It was a different Sunday than the bottom one at TPC Scottsdale.
With 67 finishes including a birdie in his final six holes, Scotty Schaeffler made a 26-foot birdie on the third playoff hole to beat Patrick Cantley to claim his much-anticipated maiden title.
En route to victory, Schaeffler passed 24-year-old rookie Sahit Thegala, who took a 54-hole lead and bogeyed the 17th hole and remained on top of the leader board for much of the afternoon until falling into a third-place tie. With Brooks Koepka and Xander Schöfel.
With the win, Schaeffler claimed first place prize money of $1.476 million, out of a total purse of $8.2 million. Here’s the prize money paid for each golfer who takes the deductible.
