The Ryder Cup has become one of the greatest sporting events in the world. Every two years, the 24 best players from Europe and the United States face off in a match-play competition. Drama, tension, incredible golf, camaraderie and sportsmanship are served up in equal measure, enthralling millions of viewers around the world. It is an event that transcends sport, yet remains true to the spirit of its founder, Samuel Ryder.

Starting the first formal match, the U.S. The Ryder Cup team chose to field a team of Native Americans. Only Walter Hagen, Bill Mehlhorn and Al Watrous remained from the previous year’s unofficial U.S. squad that had competed at Wentworth. The British team from 1926 was virtually intact, with the exception of Charles Whitcombe, who replaced his brother Ernie, and Ted Ray, who took over captain’s duties from Abe Mitchell, who was diagnosed with appendicitis. The British team departed from Southampton on the Aquitania for a six-day voyage. The competition at Worcester Country Club consisted of four foursomes and eight singles matches. The Americans won nine matches, losing only two and one in a half. Ray later summarized the early matches: “One of the main reasons for our failure was the superior performance of the American team. They performed much better than us.”

Gala dinner 2023

Ryder Cup stars and their guests tucked into a four-course gourmet meal as they celebrated with a gala dinner on the eve of the storied tournament.

In keeping with the tournament’s location – Rome’s Marco Simone Golf & Country Club – those who held the exclusive evening tucked into Italian fare just days before Teams USA and Europe tee off at the biennial competition.

The long-held tradition is a black tie event, and dressed in their finery, both teams paused competitive hostilities to enjoy the lavish meal.

Jena Sims, who is married to Team USA star and LIV rebel Brooks Kopeka, provided her followers on social media with sneaked insight into the festivities, including a snapshot of the event’s menu.
