Ryan Garcia denied using performance-enhancing drugs in a video posted to social media Wednesday night, after ESPN reported he tested positive for a banned substance.

Garcia defeated former amateur rival Devin Haney by majority decision on April 20 in New York. Garcia defeated Haney three times and gave the WBC super lightweight champion his first defeat, but he could not win the title because he was over the weight limit.

“Everyone knows I don’t cheat,” Garcia said in a video posted on X. “I have never taken steroids…I don’t even know where to get steroids.…I barely take supplements. Big lie.”

ESPN, citing a letter from the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association, reported that the 25-year-old Garcia tested positive for the performance-enhancing substance ostarine the day before and on the day of the fight. Ostarine is a selective androgen receptor modulator, and its use can stimulate muscle growth. This drug is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Drug test

Ryan Garcia shocked the boxing world on April 20 when he knocked down Devin Haney three times en route to a majority decision victory. That win already had an asterisk after Garcia missed weight badly before the fight, but things took a turn for the worse on Wednesday evening when multiple reports said Garcia would fail a VADA drug test before the fight. Failed.

Veteran boxing reporter Dan Rafael was the first to share reports of Garcia’s failed test, claiming the result was related to the performance-enhancing drug Ostarine. Rafael noted that Garcia tested positive on April 19, the day before the fight, and on April 20 during post-fight evaluation. ESPN’s Mike Coppinger then reported that he had received a VADA letter confirming the situation.

Garcia behaved bizarrely during the fight, talking about various conspiracy theories on social media, claiming to have evidence of aliens and claiming to drink alcohol regularly, which he admitted after the fight.

Next fight

That’s the question Ryan Garcia asked after defeating Devin Haney in a dominant win on April 21. And on Sunday, he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, “I wanna fight again man.”

The possibilities are interesting, and there’s no reason to wait for an announcement.

Now is a good time to consider options. These also include the sequel to Honey Battle. Rematch with Gervonta “Tank” Davis. A bout with Errol Spence Jr., or even a crossover bout with popular UFC champion Shawn O’Malley.

First thing to keep in mind: Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs) said he’s moving up from 140 pounds to 147 pounds, the super lightweight division where he feuds with Haney and Davis.

“My body literally can’t go lower than 143,” said the 25-year-old Garica, who weighed three pounds over the 140-pound contract limit for the Haney fight — which cost him $1.5 million — and was previously the WBC super lightweight. Had a shot at the title. Winning by majority decision. “It’s impossible.”
