It appears that Ryan Garcia is leading the fight for his comeback on April 9 with a clean slate. It was announced via a communiqué that García would move on from Eddie Reynoso. He will now work with Joe Guson.

The move takes place a few weeks before Emmanuel Tago faces Garcia inside The Alamodome in San Antonio, TX.

“I am excited to announce that I will now be working with Hall of Fame trainer Joe Gossen in addition to my father, Henry Garcia,” Garcia said in a release. I worked with Joe when I was growing up, and we both have maintained a good relationship over the years. I can’t wait to be back and to continue this journey together. Now I’ll work out in San Diego out of my own gym, Fears King – and my goal remains the same: to be world champion.”

New trainer

A few texts were exchanged and it took about five minutes for Ryan Garcia to travel to a Southern California beach with no exact destination.

It’s a favorite part of Garcia’s first official training camp under new trainer Joe Gossen, who lives close enough to Garcia in the San Diego area that whenever Garcia utters the word, Gossen will pick him up in a Lincoln Hybrid that’s no longer manufactured. And goes on the drive to chat.

Boxing is rarely discussed on these drives. With Goosein behind the wheel, his new protégé receives life lessons as they form a bond far greater than in the typical boxer-trainer relationship. After Garcia’s last few years, that connection and stability is something he craves.

One of the sport’s most prominent but unproven contenders, García is in the midst of a turning point in his career. After a five-fight run under the wing of pound-for-pound star Canelo Alvarez and his mutual trainer, Eddie Reynoso, the 23-year-old lightweight is doing something new. García cited Reynoso’s unavailability to change trainers as the main reason, telling ESPN’s “Max on Boxing” that Reynoso “didn’t really have time to train me.”

The change appeared to be in motion for some time. In an October 2021 interview with Complex, Alvarez was concerned about Garcia’s work ethic.

“Look, Ryan has a lot of talent,” Alvarez said. “But in my eyes, he’s wasting a lot of time and wasting his talent. I look at him and don’t see him 100% dedicated and, for us, that’s a bad sign.”

Four months later, García announced his departure from Team Canelo, something he felt had been discussed enough in the weeks leading up to his comeback fight against Emmanuel Tago (32–1, 15 KO). Welterweight contender Virgil Ortiz Jr. also quit his gym due to Renoso’s unavailability. He is now training under Manny Robles.
