William Roger Clemens (born August 4, 1962), nicknamed “The Rockets”, is an American former professional baseball pitcher who played 24 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB), primarily with the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. Clemens was one of the most influential pitchers in major league history, with 354 wins, a 3.12 earned run average (ERA), and 4,672 strikeouts, the third-most all-time. An 11-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion, he won seven Cy Young Awards during his career, more than any other pitcher in history. Clemens was known for his fiercely competitive nature and tough pitching style, which he used to intimidate the batsmen.

Controversy

In his final season on the Baseball Writers Association of America ballot, Roger Clemens failed to make the Hall of Fame on Tuesday. Clemens received 65.2% of the vote, leaving him just shy of the 75% of the vote required to enter his 10th and final session on the ballot.

Former Red Sox slugger David Ortiz, who received 77.9% of the vote, was the only player elected on Tuesday. Billy Wagner, a former close of the Astros, received 51% on the ballot in his seventh year.

Affair

Upon us again, we find ourselves again wrestling with the annual question of whether two of baseball’s titans — Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens — belong in the Hall of Fame. Typically, this discussion revolves around his alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs, a charge that both denies.

This article is not about allegations of PED. Roger Clemens is not inducted into the Hall of Fame for an entirely different reason, and one that deserves far more attention than it has received.

Earlier this year, Pittsburgh Pirates close aide Felipe Vazquez was arrested for sexually assaulting a young girl. The world of baseball was justifiably reprehensible and abhorrent, because anyone who acts this way doesn’t belong on the baseball field. And yet, this same baseball world collectively shrinks when it comes to Roger Clemens’s longtime “relationship” with the late country singer Mindy McCready.

In 2008, the New York Daily News reported that “Roger Clemens pursued a decade-long affair with country star Mindy McCready, a romance that began when McCready was a 15-year-old aspiring singer performing at a karaoke bar. Tha and Clemens was a 28-year-old Red Sox ace and married father of two, multiple sources have told the Daily News.”

Why is not in the hall of fame

While David Ortiz got his call on Tuesday at the National Baseball Hall of Fame, four polarizing and controversial players in baseball history did not. For Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, Kurt Schilling and Sammy Sosa, Tuesday was their last chance to make it to Cooperstown via traditional voting.

All four did not receive the required 75 percent of the vote on the ballot in their tenth and final season, with Bonds getting 66 percent, Clemens 65.2 percent, Schilling 58.6 percent and Sosa just 18.5 percent. All four of them will no longer appear on the BBWAA ballot, so their next shot at going to the Hall of Fame today rests on the Games Committee, which will vote at next December’s winter meetings.
