Richard Barnes (born July 17, 1954) is a men’s college basketball head coach for the Tennessee Volunteers of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Barnes coached the Texas Longhorns from 1998 to 2015, taking the team to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament in 16 of his 17 seasons, including 14 straight seasons from 1999 to 2012, as well as in 2003 under T.J. Ford’s leadership also included an appearance in the Final Four. Barnes previously coached at George Mason University, Providence College and Clemson University. His overall record in the NCAA Tournament is 25–26 (.490) (including 19–16 at Texas).

Dean smith video
No. 10 Tennessee gave up 61 points in the first half against No. 17 North Carolina on Wednesday night at the Dean Smith Center and trailed by 24 points in the second half before seeing its lead cut to six points. Lost 100–92 in ACC-SEC Challenge game.

“He stepped on someone’s foot, rolled his ankle. It seemed like he got it pretty good because he’s the kind of guy who bounces back. And for him not to get up, he understood it very well. It felt good when I saw the whole thing. “He stepped on someone’s foot and rolled it over.”
Tennessee’s performance in the first half was 61 points.
“I told my team at halftime, this is the worst basketball half of (any) team I’ve ever coached. I have never seen a team that has our potential and was so bad in the first half. I thought that, there’s no doubt that I knew North Carolina, Hubert (Davis) would prepare them to come out and be really aggressive and play hard. I thought we were stable. I thought we had people, and mostly older people, losing the boom. Didn’t follow our scouting report, how we wanted to play, missed shots we missed in the first. When we came back (in the second half), we didn’t let them down. And still after all that’s said and done, the bottom line is that at some point we’ve got some open shots that we have to eliminate. And some free throws at the end to put us back in it.
“But I’m really proud of Zakai, I thought he did a really good job, and I thought he was back where we wanted him to be. And thought Cade Phillips gave us a lot of good minutes. Really. Proud of Josiah (Jordan James). He played more minutes than we wanted, but he was a player from start to finish that I thought was ready to play. (He) stayed in these games.
Dean smith fight
When Rick Barnes left Providence for Clemson, he was coming out of a conference that was more physical and nicer than the ACC at the time (or now, for that matter).
It didn’t go very well, at least with UNC and Dean Smith.
This was in the mid to late 90’s. In this video, Barnes says there was a sign in his locker room that read, “Strength defies talent.”
He also says that today he would probably handle things differently and that after having a player like Kevin Durant at Texas, he realized that a free-flowing offense takes a lot of time.

Barnes says things were getting better and he and Smith were called to the house of former ACC Commissioner Gene Corrigan for a “sit-in” that included fines.
Salary
Tennessee basketball coach Rick Barnes received a one-year contract extension, athletics director Danny White announced Tuesday.
Barnes’ contract will now run until the 2027–28 season. The remaining five years of Barnes’ contract are worth $29.4 million and have an average annual salary of $5.88 million. He is expected to make $6 million in each of the final two years of the contract, which runs through April 15, 2028.
“Tennessee has always been great to me and my family,” Barnes said in a school release. “I thank Danny and this great university for this opportunity as we prepare for the upcoming season. With the excitement surrounding campus and the entire city of Knoxville, I’m thrilled that we can continue to be a part of that positivity on campus.” Momentum in.
