She also earned a master’s degree in social work from Adelphi University in 1979.
In 1981, the Simmons family moved to Washington, D.C., where Richard Simmons joined The Washington Post Company as president and chief operating officer. “He was a wise builder of the company for ten important years and the most effective business partner Katharine Graham ever had,” says Donald Graham, son of the Post’s owner and publisher at the time Simmons worked there.

Richard Simmons’ brother said the legendary fitness personality’s death has been ruled an accident.
Lenny Simmons, Richard’s brother, told PEOPLE through his attorney that Simmons’ death was “accidental due to a recent fall and complications of heart disease.”
Lenny Simmons said he was notified of the death Wednesday morning by a call from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.
The statement said Simmons had no illegal drugs in his system at the time of his death.
“Toxicology reports were negative other than the medication Richard was given,” the statement said. “The family would like to thank everyone for the love and support they have received during this time of great loss.”
Simmons died last month at the age of 76. He celebrated his birthday just before his death and thanked his fans for their well-wishes.

His perfect California tan was highlighted by the shine of his white sneakers and signature short-shorts. His slightly receding curls of hair had a shine of anti-frizz oil and his eyes danced with an unbridled joy.
