Seymour played college football for the University of Georgia, where he was part of the defensive line.
After college, he was drafted sixth overall by the New England Patriots in the 2001 NFL Draft. For most of his career, Seymour played for the New England Patriots, with whom he won three Super Bowls. Seymour was initially upset after he was traded to the Oakland Raiders for a first-round draft pick in 2009, but all went well in 2011 when he signed a two-year, $30 million contract with Oakland. Seymour did it all in his 12-year NFL career. After being selected by the New England Patriots as the sixth-overall pick in the 2001 NFL Draft, he debuted as a rookie in Super Bowl XXXVI. The win was the first of three Super Bowl titles he would claim in his illustrious career.
Over the span of his career, he made nearly 500 tackles and 57.5 sacks—both in the top 15 for defensive linemen in NFL history—with 39 pass deflections. He was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 2000s along with Raiders legend cornerback Charles Woodson, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame last year.
As a seven-time pro bowler, two of them came as selection raiders. In his four seasons in silver and black, he made 139 tackles and 18.5 sacks, while playing 52 of 53.

LOS ANGELES, California – Former New England Patriots defensive lineman Richard Seymour was selected to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame tonight. Seymour will be inducted into the Hall of Fame class of 2022 at an induction ceremony held in Canton, Ohio, this summer.
Seymour spent the first eight seasons of his 12-year NFL career with the Patriots and was instrumental in giving New England six division titles, four conference crowns, and three Super Bowl championships. He is the 10th Patriot to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Guard John Hannah, who spent his entire 13-year career with New England from 1973–85, was the first Patriots player to be installed in 1991. Linebacker Andre Tippett, who spent his entire 12-year career with the Patriots from 1982–93, was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2008. Cornerback Ty Law became the first player to help the Patriots claim the Super Bowl championship to receive the honor. Linebacker Nick Buoniconti and cornerback Mike Haynes each played the first part of their careers with the Patriots and are now members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. They have since been joined by running back Curtis Martin, wide receiver Randy Moss, linebacker Jr. CU and former head coach Bill Parcells as other Pro Football Hall of Famers who spent time with the Patriots.
