Capcom has officially announced its long-awaited Resident 4 Remake, and has provided a release date: March 24, 2023.
This new version of Capcom’s survival horror classic kicks off tonight’s State of Play showcase with a catchy trailer.
As expected, we saw several glimpses of Evil 4-esque locations, although it was also clarified that this is a somewhat different remake, with a lot of new looks. Here’s that trailer:
In an accompanying PlayStation Blog post, Capcom explained that this new version of Resi 4 “will be familiar to fans of the series, while also providing a refreshing feel”.
“This is being done by modernizing the graphics and updating the controls to a modern standard, keeping the game’s storyline at the core of its direction,” Capcom continued.
For example, scenes from the protagonist Leon S. Kennedy meeting the US President were certainly not in the original Race 4 – although they do play out in the more recent Evil: Infinite Darkness CGI series.
There’s no suggestion that Resident 4 will be exclusive to PlayStation, although there will be some sort of PlayStation VR2 functionality. [Update: In fact, Capcom has now confirmed that the game’s launch platforms are PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.]

Evil is a science fiction action-horror film series by Capcom based on the Japanese video game franchise of the same name.German studio Konstantin Film purchased the rights to adapt the series in January 1998. In 2001, Screen Gems acquired the distribution rights and Paul W.S. Anderson as the writer and director of Resident Evil (2002). Anderson continued as writer and producer for Evil: Apocalypse (2004) and Resident : Extinction (2007), and for Evil: Afterlife (2010), Resident : Retribution (2012) and Evil: The Final. returned as director. Chapter (2016). These first six films follow Alice (Mila Jovovich), a character created for the films. Alice, a former security expert and undercover operative, fights the Umbrella Corporation, whose bio-weapons have triggered a zombie apocalypse. Characters from the games appear, including Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine, Ada Wong, Carlos Oliveira, Chris Redfield, Leon S. Kennedy, Barry Burton and antagonists Albert Wesker, head of Umbrella Corporation, and James Marcus, Umbrella’s top virologist.
