Contract:

Smith is entering the final year of his 5-year/$25M contract, which he signed with the Florida Panthers in 2016. The Golden Knights inherited that deal in the 2017 expansion draft and was paid in full. Since his arrival, Smith has scored 82 goals and 110 assists for Vegas. The 29-year-old averages 20.5 goals per season and plays 18:00 minutes per game as a Golden Knight, playing in all conditions. It’s safe to say that he has been a key member of the franchise’s early success.

return policy

The Golden Knights are mostly looking for cap relief so a straight hockey trade is unlikely. If either team is willing to send a draft pick, prospect, or low-cost player to Vegas instead of Smith, it will be a win for both teams. In that scenario, the Golden Knights will have more financial flexibility and receive a valuable asset that they can keep or even flip.

Trade:

The New Jersey Devils have two solid young centers in Nico Hischier and Jack Hughes. However, they could benefit from adding Smith to the team. He could slot nicely in their top-six and help those two centers out nicely. Although the Devils are not expected to be contenders this season, they have a lot of cap space and could use a veteran to help mentor their young guys.

The Hurricanes are prepared to lose key wingers this off-season in Jordan Martinook and Warren Foegele. Smith could be a great player to help fix this, as it would give them another top-six winger. The Hurricanes also are in win-now mode, so they should be open to adding a player like Smith. After re-signing RFA Andrei Svechnikov, they should still have a lot of cap space left, too.

Elite:

The Vegas Golden Knights knew what they were doing when they acquired Smith in a trade at the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft.

Smith was a big reason the Florida Panthers, coached by Gerard Gallant, won the Atlantic Division title in 2015-16. Two seasons later, he played a key role in helping the Vegas Golden Knights to the best finish by a first-year team in NHL history — again on a team coached by Gallant. Smith, a right wing and the brother of New York Rangers defenseman Brendan Smith, teamed with center William Karlsson and left wing Jonathan Marchessault to form one of the NHL’s most effective lines.
