Reece James was injured mid-afternoon on the pitch against AC Milan last night, with Chelsea being substituted for a nod in the middle of the match.

With a packed schedule for Graham Potter’s Blues in the next month ahead of the World Cup, Chelsea and England could not have come at a worse time. Meanwhile, Kyle Walker, who was expected to start for England in Qatar, has had groin surgery which means he could miss the tournament which emphasizes the importance of James to Gareth Southgate.

What happened to James?
Moments earlier, the defender fell to the ground after a collision with Milan’s Theo Hernandez.

He tried and fought through the visual pain of the said knock. But when Rafael Leo overtook him to open the blues’ backline, James’ evening came to an end.

what did james say
James sent out a message on Twitter with his ‘fingers crossed’ for the positive news, leaving fans concerned with such an important player for the club and country who will potentially be out at a critical period. He wrote: “Fingers crossed it’s not bad. Love for all the messages, I appreciate you all.”

Reece James was back on the pitch – in a training bib but no other extras or protective accouterments – after the final whistle on Chelsea’s 2-0 win over AC Milan at the San Siro on Tuesday night, and it is expected to be a good one. Indications are that the young right back knee injury, which forced him down just after the hour mark, is not serious.

It is certainly better than the crutches on which Wesley Fofana left last week’s match against AC Milan, although head coach Graham Potter is not hoping for a proper diagnosis until tomorrow at the earliest.

“Reece, we’re hoping he’ll be fine. [We need] 24-48 hours because it’s too early to tell you anything more than that.”

Until then, the best we can do is hope for the best, which is what James himself is doing.

“Fingers crossed it’s not bad. Love for all the messages, I appreciate you all.”

Chelsea boss Graham Potter admitted he would not know the extent of Reece James’ injury until 48 hours after a right-back limped during the second half of the Blues Champions League with AC Milan on Tuesday night. And the defender is now a suspect for England’s World Cup squad. Chelsea went on to win the match 2–0 at the San Siro.

James has been one of his side’s best performers over the past few seasons and has once again started the current campaign well. On Saturday, the England international was deemed fit enough to start on the bench only after the Blues took on Wolves in the Premier League.

He returned to the starting line-up for Tuesday’s showdown with Milan and caused all sorts of problems to the home defense as he attempted to do things from the front. But he was forced to hit the hour mark after landing hard on his right foot.

With less than six weeks left for the World Cup to begin, there are doubts whether the 22-year-old will be fit enough to take his place in the Three Lions squad. Gareth Southgate has named James in his starting line-up for England’s last four matches and clearly thinks a lot about the player. So when he announces it next Thursday the manager will be desperate to keep him in their starting squad.
