William Ray Guy (December 22, 1949 – November 3, 2022) was an American professional football player, a punter for the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders of the National Football League (NFL). Guy was a first-team All-American selection for the Southern Miss Golden Eagles in 1972 as a senior, and was the first pure punter to be drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft, when the Oakland Raiders won him 23rd. was chosen with Overall selection in 1973. He won three Super Bowls with the Raiders. Guy was elected to both the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2014. An eight-time All-Pro, Guy is widely regarded as the greatest punter of all time.

Ray Guy’s son told the cause of his father’s death. Ray Guy passed away due to advanced stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He was 72 years old when he died. Ray Guy was receiving the medical care he needed from a Hattiesburg-area hospice.

Hall of fame speech
Guy said that being a part of the Hall of Fame, which is forever, is something that is beyond his wildest dreams. He began by thanking everyone there, including a large group of former punters. He then said that there were two people who were no longer with us who needed to be thanked – his college coach P.W. Underwood and former Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis.
He said that two of his biggest influences in his life were his late parents, and he thanked them as well. Guy said that he took a look at everything he had done since childhood, and couldn’t determine where he realized that football was what he wanted, and that making the Hall of Fame was his goal. He said he could have been a pitcher in MLB or a player in the NBA. He hadn’t even decided when he went to college.
But somewhere along the way, he realized he needed to focus on one thing: kicking the football. He wanted to dedicate everything to perfect his craft. He added that he would rather be in the background and not be the center of attention, something that clearly fits as a punter. You focus on the punter for the first two seconds of every fourth down and that’s about it.
