Miami Hurricanes
Police arrested a former Miami Hurricanes football player Thursday in connection to the November 2006 shooting death of teammate Bryan Pata, nearly 15 years after the crime and nine months after an ESPN investigation pointed out missteps in the long-stalled police inquiry.
The Miami-Dade Police Department said U.S. marshals arrested Rashaun Jones, 35, on a first-degree murder charge in the killing. In a video issued on Twitter, Detective Juan Segovia thanked the Pata family and the community for keeping the pressure on to solve the case.

On January 4, 2010, Jones announced that he would forgo his senior season at Georgia and enter the 2010 NFL Draft, as he was projected to be a second round pick by NFL draft experts. He was one of 54 collegiate defensive backs to attend the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana and completed all of the combine drills.
He finished tied for third among all defensive backs in the bench press, tied for fifth in the vertical jump, and finished 21st in the 40-yard dash. On March 16, 2010, he attended Georgia’s pro day and improved his times in the 40-yard dash (4.50s) and 20-yard dash (2.64s) and ran positional drills for scouts and team representatives.
He was linked to the Miami Dolphins after attending a dinner with team personnel during a two-day visit. At the conclusion of the pre-draft process, Jones was projected to be a third or fourth round pick by NFL draft experts and scouts. He was ranked the third best strong safety prospect in the draft by NFLDraftScout.com.
Arrested
In a breaking report earlier this afternoon, The Miami Herald is reporting that former Miami Hurricanes S Rashaun Jones has been charged with and arrested for the murder of former Miami Hurricanes DL Bryan Pata.
This is the conclusion of a situation that has been ongoing for 15 years. Pata was murdered on November 7, 2006 outside of his apartment just minutes away from campus. The team, program, and University family at-large mourned the untimely death of the 22 year old Pata in the days following his murder. The team even printed his picture and dedicated the next game to Pata’s memory.
