Unlike Rangers’ Old Firm rivalry with Glasgow neighbours Celtic, the feud with Aberdeen is a comparatively modern phenomenon which developed from the 1970s on a competitive sporting basis but escalated into hostility on the pitch and in the stands, with the animosity continuing into the 21st century.

Highlights

Rangers legend Walter Smith was honoured as the Gers fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Aberdeen at Ibrox, but their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership was cut to two points.

Former Rangers manager Smith died aged 73 on Tuesday and it was an emotionally-charged Ibrox that witnessed the visitors race into a two-goal lead after 15 minutes through headers by striker Christian Ramirez and former Celtic captain Scott Brown.

The shell-shocked champions reduced the deficit with an Alfredo Morelos header in the 20th minute and levelled with 10 minutes to go through a James Tavernier penalty but had to settle for a point.

Result

The Rangers and Aberdeen rivalry is always special but tonight was something extra as Walter Smith was remembered. Davie Provan spoke of a man who was a football addict and the great man would have loved the action on the pitch.

The Gaffer was revered in Govan and the natives made sure he was remembered with an emotional tribute. From Pep Guardiola to punters at clubs across these shores – this man of substance and stature has been saluted for the legacy he has left behind.

But Rangers failed to pick up three points as Aberdeen were 2-0 ahead after goals from Ramirez and Brown but Morelos pulled one back quickly. Tavernier’s late penalty recused a point.

News

Rangers vs Aberdeen

Steven Gerrard refused to use the emotion around Walter Smith’s death as an excuse for Rangers having to come from two goals behind to hold Aberdeen.

The home manager had urged his Premiership leaders to give a display worthy of their legendary former boss.

But he needed an Alfredo Morelos header and contentious James Tavernier penalty to cancel out early goals from Christian Ramirez and Scott Brown.
