Former ESPN reporter Rachel Nichols has been hired at Showtime Basketball, the network said Friday, where she will work on content as a producer and a host.

The network said that Nichols will be on the basketball vertical and “contribute to a number of programs and projects from Showtime Basketball across multiple platforms.”

Nichols left ESPN earlier this year after becoming embroiled in controversy after an article appeared in The New York Times, when the newspaper obtained recordings of a phone conversation between Nichols and Adam Mendelsohn, who was in charge of Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron. James was a longtime advisor. Nichols was in the bubble covering the NBA at the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

In that conversation, Nichols praised co-worker Maria Taylor, but also questioned her status on the network because of her record with Variety.

A New York Times report released on Sunday included excerpts from a leaked July 2020 conversation by ESPN host Rachel Nichols, which led to internal backlash at the sports network and long-standing dismay for black women working there.

A conversation between Nichols and LeBron James’ longtime mentor Adam Mendelsohn was accidentally recorded by Nichols herself after she forgot to turn off her video camera and was broadcast to ESPN’s video servers. In it, Nichols lamented that he was dropped to host “NBA Countdown” during last year’s NBA Finals and was instead offered the job of a sideline reporter. Black collaborator Maria Taylor was chosen instead to host, leading Nichols to suggest that the decision was made because ESPN was “feeling the pressure” on diversity efforts.
