Matt Barnes:

Rachel Nichols is a well-respected voice in NBA circles. For the last five years, she has hosted The Jump on ESPN and steered the conversation on the Association, interviewing current and former players, coaches, and commissioner Adam Silver. It’s a long way from where it all started.

Occupation

Before Rachel Nichols landed her first professional job, she cut her teeth in journalism school at Northwestern University in the early 1990s. Chicago during that time produced a boon for sports journalists, with the Bulls putting together their first of two three-peats.

Pierce began to trend on Twitter by Saturday afternoon as the video spread.

ESPN’s Nichols was also dragged into the talk on Twitter despite having nothing to do on the video.

The mention of Nichols in the video led to a stream of misogynistic tweets about The Jump host.

While Pierce has not yet addressed his Saturday videos, he has published a series of tweets in the days following – the latest two seemingly related to ESPN axing him as a host.

On the Sunday morning following his viral Instagram Live, Pierce tweeted, simply saying ‘Good morning’.

Comment:

NBA coverage was marred by controversy this past postseason when The New York Times published a piece detailing longtime reporter Rachel Nichols’ recorded remarks about then-colleague Maria Taylor.

The fallout from that story led to Malika Andrews replacing Nichols as the reporter at the NBA Finals. Taylor would sign a contract with NBC Sports. And now, Nichols’ time at ESPN is essentially done.

ESPN:

With the NBA preseason set to start in about six weeks, ESPN has removed Rachel from its coverage of the league and canceled what is arguably its flagship NBA-focused show, The Jump, which Nichols fronted.

Nichols’ last appearance on the show was August 16. Since then, it has been hosted by ESPN NBA reporter Malika Andrews.
