The franchise was established in 1933 as a replacement for the bankrupt Frankford Yellow Jackets, when a group led by Bert Bell secured the rights to an NFL franchise in Philadelphia. Since their formation, the Eagles have appeared in the playoffs 27 times, won 14 division titles (11 in the NFC East), appeared in four pre-merger NFL Championship Games, winning three of them (1948, 1949, and 1960), and appeared in three Super Bowls, winning Super Bowl LII at the end of the 2017 season.

Logo

From 1948 to 1995, the team logo was an eagle in flight carrying a football in its claws, although from ’69–72, the eagle took on a more stylized look. In 1973 the team’s name was added below the eagle, returning to its pre-1969 look.

However, both the logo and uniforms were radically altered in 1996. The primary kelly green color was changed to a darker shade, officially described as “midnight green.”

The choice of an eagle as the team mascot honored the insignia of the New Deal program, the National Recovery Administration, which featured a blue eagle as its insignia.

For several decades, the Eagles’ colors were kelly green, silver, and white. In 1954 the Eagles, along with the Baltimore Colts, became the second team ever in the NFL to put a logo on their helmets, with silver wings on a kelly green helmet. In 1969 the team wore two helmet versions: Kelly green with white wings in road games, and white with kelly green wings at home. From 1970 to ’73, they wore the white helmets with Kelly green wings exclusively before switching back to Kelly green helmets with silver wings. By 1974, Joseph A. Scirrotto Jr. designed the silver wings took on a white outline, and this style on a kelly green helmet became standard for over two decades.

Rumors

The Eagles will host the Steelers in their preseason opener on Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field. And even though the outcome of game doesn’t matter, it’s an important one for the organization as it will be the first of the Nick Sirianni Era in Philly.

Birds fans will get their first taste of what the new head coach looks like calling his gameplan. They’ll finally get a real look at how Jalen Hurts runs the Sirianni offense, and what it might look like. They’ll get a chance to see Jonathan Gannon’s mysterious defense for the first time.

Trade Rumors

For the first time in a very, very, very long time, the Philadelphia Eagles might actually have a good secondary. The additions of Steven NelsonJosiah Scott, and Zech McPhearson aren’t going to suddenly transform the Eagles’ secondary into the Legion of Boom 2.0, but padding out the secondary with professional bodies alongside Darius Slay and now-slot cornerback Avonte Maddox will unquestionably make Jalen Hurts’ life easier this fall.

But just because the secondary is good doesn’t mean it can’t be better, right? With Maddox and Nelson set to hit the open market next spring, the Eagles will eventually need to lock up their long-term secondary once and for all, regardless of who ultimately comprises the unit in 2022 and beyond.
