Like everyone involved, Phil Mickelson is now moving away from full speed with his comments about a potential breakaway Saudi-funded golf league.
In a blatant attempt to bolster the PGA, Mickelson told writer Alan Shipnk that the Saudis are “to be involved with the horror motherf—–” and that they “kill people there for being gay.” ” But for Mickelson, going to bed with Saudi money will be worth it as a “one-time opportunity to reshape how the PGA Tour operates.”
Mickelson’s teammates hailed him as “naive, selfish, arrogant, ignorant”, even as golfers fled the concept from the rumor of joining him, seemingly killing it upon arrival.
Now Phil has great regrets – both for the Saudis, who openly said “have a terrible record on human rights” – and for their current sponsors who fill up their bank accounts.
“My experience with LIV Golf Investments has been very positive,” he said in a statement Tuesday. “I apologize for anything I said that was taken out of context.”
Mickelson blamed the reporter for quoting correctly. He added that Shipk’s story “was about off-record comments being shared out of context”, which Shipnak quickly said was “completely false.”
Mickelson, 51, blamed the vague “pressure and tension” for his unusually candid comments about the Saudi league.
