Per ESPN Stats & Info, this is just the fifth time Mickelson has missed the cut at the U.S. Open. His 11 over is his second-worst score, relative to par, in any major event. His worst score came in the 2020 U.S. Open, where he shot 13 over.
Mickelson – a recent defender of the Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf Invitational Series and one of its biggest headliners – declined to speak to reporters after Friday’s finish. Instead, the United States Golf Association, which runs the US Open, released a transcript of his comments. According to the transcript, Mickelson made no mention of LIV Golf.

Brooklyn, Mass. — Phil Mickelson stands behind a makeshift TV background wall in an outdoor interview tent two minutes before his scheduled 1 p.m. for this week’s US Open. Pre-tournament press conference Monday.
The undersized tent was packed with reporters who were ready to pepper him about his controversial involvement with the Saudi-backed new LIV Golf Tour, his subsequent suspension from the PGA Tour and his four-month sabbatical, among other things .
At 12:58 p.m., Mickelson and a USGA official were standing behind that wall and the officer asked him if he wanted the interview to be cut at a certain point.
“No,” Mickelson told him. “We can go as long as we need to. I understand [reporters] have a lot of questions.”
And so began the 25-minute grilling of 51-year-old Mickelson, the second such session in six days. Journalists sought answers as to why he opted to join the Greg Norman-fronted Tour, a decision that led to the suspension of 16 other PGAs. Along with the Tour players, who played at the LIV’s opening ceremony last week.
