Masters results

One of just eight players to have won the Masters at least three times, Phil Mickelson proved last year that he doesn’t end there when it comes to competing in the majors. At age 50, Mickelson became the oldest major champion with a PGA Championship win at Kiawah Island, the sixth major title of his career. Making his 30th appearance at the Masters, the ‘lefty’ finished 21st last year at the Augusta Nationals, where he has 15 top-10s and 11 top-5s in his career. Known for his magical touch around the greens, Mickelson is a World Golf Hall of Famer with 45 PGA Tour victories. He has won the Champions Tour four times.

When Mickelson started the 2004 Masters Tournament, he was universally regarded as the best player in golf who had yet to win a major championship. It was his 47th start in a Major, and he posted 17 Top 10 finishes. But no victory.

Mickelson had 22 other victories on the PGA Tour by that time, but none of them were major ones. To a golfer of Mickelson’s achievements, being called “the best player without a major” is more an insult than a compliment—but by the end of the 2004 Masters, this no longer applied.

Suspension

Speaking ahead of this week’s Players Championship at TPC Sagars on Tuesday, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan spoke in circles on the subject, sometimes speaking with both sides of his mouth. In doing so, Monahan ensured that Mickelson was suspended for “obnoxious greed” of the PGA Tour, as well as explosive comments about his dealings with the Saudi-backed golf league proposed by Greg Norman.

“Listen, I’m not going to comment — we don’t comment — on disciplinary matters,” Monahan said. “Phil has asked for some time to go away, and I’m not going to comment further on that.” Mickelson, 51, issued a statement last month, in which he apologized for the “reckless” comments and said he was “deeply sorry for my choice of words.”

Wife

Phil Mickelson is one of the most decorated golfers the game has ever seen. Currently holding six major titles, the left-hander is eighth on the list of all-time wins on the PGA Tour with 45. He is the oldest Major Championship winner to claim the 2021 PGA Championship at the age of 50 years, 11 months. and 7 days.

Gaining his first PGA Tour title in 1991 has been a constant factor throughout Phil’s career, and that is his wife, Amy, whom he met in 1992. Back in 1992, the two attended Arizona State University. At the time, Phil was a senior and Amy was a junior as well as a cheerleader on the Phoenix Suns NBA cheerleading team. He said; “When he told me he was a pro golfer, I thought he worked in a golf course shop.”

The pair married four years later in 1996 and have three children. The first, Amanda, was born the day after Phil finished second with Payne Stewart at the 1999 US Open. Sofia was born in 2001 and finally Ivan was born in 2003. Due to complications at birth, Amy unfortunately ruptured an artery and Evan was not breathing for a while, but thankfully the two pulled through.
