After intense criticism in recent days, Phil Mickelson on Tuesday apologized for his comments about Saudi Arabia and its rumored golf league.

Mickelson made a lengthy statement on Twitter Tuesday afternoon, blaming his latest comments from an upcoming book for being used “out of context and without my consent.”

“I have used words that I sincerely regret that do not reflect my true feelings or intentions,” Mickelson said. “It was reckless, I offended people, and I am deeply sorry for my choice of words. I am beyond disappointed and will do my best to introspect and learn from it.”

Golfer Phil Mickelson has apologized for controversial comments he made about Saudi Arabia and the Saudi-backed upstart golf league, which had long hoped to lure star players from the golf establishment.

In a statement posted to social media on Tuesday, Mickelson wrote that he used the words “I am sincerely sorry” in a recently published interview, in which the six-time major winner called the Saudi regime a “scary motherf* *****” told and brushed what is known about human rights violations, including the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

“It was reckless, I offended people, and I am deeply sorry for my choice of words,” Mickelson wrote.

Mickelson apologized after a backlash over comments he made about the Super Golf League, a separate league with ambitions to take away stars from the world’s major professional golf organizations, including the PGA Tour. SGL is reportedly financed by the Sovereign Wealth Fund of Saudi Arabia.
