The modern tour recognizes this era’s victories as “PGA Tour” victories, however. So,The formal establishment of the tour as a separate entity took place much later. The Sentry Tournament of Champions, the first tournament of the calendar year, is a field consisting only of the winners of the previous season’s competition. The result is a much smaller arena than any other tournament except The Tour Championship, which has no cuts after playing 36 holes.

The four best fields the PGA Tour saw in early 2022 were the Phoenix Open, Tournament of Champions, the Genesis Invitational and the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Scotty Schaffler has now won two of those four tournaments after a shocking victory over Tyrell Hatton, Victor Hovland and Billy Horschel at Bay Hill on Sunday.
The most extraordinary of them all came on the 15th hole where he pulled his drive way to the left and tried to put his second hood around a tree, but barely made contact. He then went up and down 149 yards to save his equal run to close the tournament. It is his second win in his last three starts and puts him at No. 1 in the FedEx Cup standings and a potential top five in the world when the Players Championship begins next week.
