The opening marquee group mornings of McIlroy, Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth were mixed. McIlroy leads with an impressive 65 which represents his lowest first round appearance in a Major since 2011. Woods, who was battling an injury to his right leg, got off to a great start but could only manage four over 74, while Spieth scored the star trio. a 72.
Behind McIlroy, Zalatoris and Hoge also put together impressive rounds of four-under 66, in the morning wave.
For an afternoon casualty, the conditions were certainly tough, with strong winds and a drier course affecting the scoring. The marquee group saw the world’s top three put together, but Scotty Scheffler, Colin Morikawa and Jon Rahm all struggled to establish any sort of momentum and finished one over, two overs and three overs respectively.
Elsewhere, Justin Thomas is lurking behind the leaders after carding a three-under-par 67 in one of the late starters’ best performances.
