“You’re going to see a very significant spike in our wallets as well,” said PGA of America CEO Seth Waugh when asked about prize money ahead of the 2022 PGA Championship.
His response was related to the question of whether PGA money would grow as much as it did at the Masters, where the total purse reached $15 million this year.
Well, the PGA Championship has matched that, as the 2022 event will also have a net worth of $15 million.
2021 PGA Championship winner Phil Mickelson took home $2.16 million. This year’s champion will receive $2.7 million. Second place will cost $1,620,000 and third place will cost $1,020,000.
Leaderboard
Justin Thomas returned by seven strokes on Sunday to win the 104th PGA Championship in Southern Hills, forcing the tournament into a three-hole aggregate playoff that he eventually defeated Will Zalatoris to take home the second Wanamaker Trophy of his youth career. Won victory. In doing so, Thomas tied for the third-highest comeback in major championship history after 54 holes.
Thomas started his day at 2 under and returned in Round 4 with a 3-under 67, including a bogey-free 3-under 32 on the back nine. He birdied the first and second playoff holes and leveled in the last, while Zalatoris matched birdies on the first hole (No. 13), but was unable to serve on the last two (No. 17–18).
Cut
The first round of the 2022 PGA Championship is on the books, and as always, the field is tightly packed together.
Rory McIlroy, who is looking for his first major win and third PGA Championship title overall, is at the top of the pack after shooting 5-under-par 65 in the first round. He took Will Zalatoris and Tom Hoge (66) ahead with a stroke.
Conditions at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., proved more favorable for those with early tee times. Those three leaders all came from the morning parties; 3 Under (by Justin Thomas and Lucas Glover) was the best score for the afternoon portion of the competition.
In all, only 26 players carded the under-par round on the first day, and some of the world’s best players – including Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson, Colin Morikawa and Scotty Scheffler – were flirting with the cut line on day two of the tournament.
