can you Feel It? can you smell it? The 2022 PGA Championship has arrived, and for the first time in 15 years, four days of golf return to the Southern Hills for a major championship. It all starts with Round 1 on Thursday as the Tulsa, Oklahoma, field will fill to capacity with fans. (Whether they’ll assimilate into those $18 beers remains to be seen.)

Excitement hits the pitch as play begins as Tiger Woods plays his second competitive golf event in 15 months and his first since the Masters. With defending champion Phil Mickelson not in the field amid his self-imposed exile, Woods will be “old hat”, fans at least 36 but hopefully 72 holes to follow.

Beyond Woods, however, has a lot to follow, and it appears as though one of his playing partners, Rory McIlroy, will be the talk of the early downs in the Southern Hills through the first 36 holes. McIlroy has taken the clubhouse lead during Round 1 play as he makes an unusually quick start in a major championship. Their pairings with Woods and Jordan Spieth are must-see TVs, but they’re hardly the dominant group on the course.

Sleeper picks

If you’ve been to this page before, you’ll know that one of the things I want to check before placing a major championship bet is to see where the public money is going. Yeah, you’ll find a lot of favorites because those are “name” bets – of course, people are going to pick Rory’s and the Tigers because they’re the ones they know. But every time you see a Cameroonian champion, a name that almost makes you wonder: what does everyone else know that I don’t?

And it’s not a knock against him. Count me among those who believe they have an equally good chance of winning the PGA Championship in Southern Hills this week. It’s just that BetMGM is not under the board of champs to win the bookmaker 150-1. And yet at Oddschecker.com, a site that tracks both the odds and which players are most popular with gamblers, the champ is… tied for the third most popular bet. With Jon Rahm, the world number two player.

The second major of the 2022 golf season officially kicks off with May’s beauty run around the Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as the PGA Championship returns to the city for the first time since 2007. This year’s case is set with a filled field, and the leaderboard is already looking strong.

It is so piled up that the unfortunate absence of a couple is not even felt. Not in attendance is defending champion Phil Mickelson, who watches from afar how the rest of the golf world goes without him. Tiger Woods will be leading it, though any hopes of a 16th major championship in Tulsa are not at best after his weekend performance at the Masters last month.

Rather, it is 2022 Masters champion Scotty Scheffler, who debuted as favorite with Jordan Spieth entering one of the top storylines as he begins his sixth attempt at winning a career Grand Slam. Worth noting is that Rory McIlroy has recently raised his game as he seeks his first major championship of any kind since 2014.
