A shocking choice from Johnson: The specialist is wooing Cameron Smith, even though he has two wins this season and was in contention at the Masters. The 28-year-old’s performance hasn’t been the same since Augusta’s triple bogey on the 12th hole left him out of contention. He missed the cut in his last stroke play event, RBC Heritage, and finished 21st at the Zurich Classic with Mark Leishman. Southern Hills is a ball-striker course, and Smith hasn’t done well at venues like this. “I don’t think Southern Hills will suit his eyes,” Johnson told Sportsline.
Johnson, on the other hand, isn’t holding back from Schaeffler, even on his low odds. Schaeffler was currently ranked 24th in the world a year ago, but has finished 2021 strong and is on a great course in 2022. He has won four of his last seven individual events, including the Masters, which was his first major. The No. 1 player in the world is also the No. 1 player in the FedEx Cup standings and is almost taking the field. The difference in points between Schaeffler and No. 2 golfer in the FedEx Cup rankings is larger than the difference between No. 2 and No. 122.
The expert is also interested to see what Rahm can do on the southern hills. Rahm held the world No. 1 spot for 36 weeks until Scheffler overtook him, but the Spaniard bounced back with a win at the Mexico Open earlier this month. It has been a tumultuous season for Rahm, who has a top-five finish (three) falling out of the top 25. He does not have a PGA Championship resume, as he has two top-10 starts in five careers, but also two finishes outside the top 50.

There’s some mystery in the air this week at the PGA Championship. Southern Hills Country Club hosts the Major for the fifth time, but for the first time since 2007, when Tiger Woods won his fourth Wanamaker Trophy in the scorching Tulsa heat. In 2018, the Perry Maxwell course underwent an extensive restoration
From Gil Hansey and Jim Wagner. Both thinned out many of the course’s trees and cut the fairway lines out of the original Depression-era dimensions.
With the freshly opened holes, new bunkers and exposed green edges, “Southern Hills will not look or function like the restricted layout dissected by Tiger Woods in 2007,” writes Golf Digest Architecture editor Derek Duncan.
The change of course also prompted Woods to come out early and try to get a glimpse of what would be in store over the coming week.
