Mets first baseman Pete Alonso was ruled out in the second inning of Tuesday’s 7-0 loss to the Padres after hitting a right-hand pitch. The team said initial X-rays on Alonso’s arm came back negative, but he would undergo further testing.

The incident occurred when Alonso attempted to stop his swing while facing Padres starter Yu Darvish at the top of the innings. Alonso collapsed to the ground in pain, and exited the field after a coach came out to watch his hand. JD Davis entered the game to run for Alonso.

Entering Tuesday, Alonso leads MLB with 54 RBIs and is second in the league in home runs with 16. He’s batting .282 through 57 games.

The first baseman broke his right arm three times in 365 days from the spring of 2016 to the spring of 2017 – once on the slide and twice on the inside pitches. The first ball inside cost him weeks at the University of Florida, and the second ball cost him six weeks at High A.

Injury update

A U Darvish fastball was hit in Alonso’s right hand and Marte walked away with left quadriceps discomfort in an innings after being caught attempting to steal second base. Initial X-rays on Alonso’s hand were negative, and further imaging revealed no breaks or fractures in the hand. Marte was less specific about his quad, but said it felt better and hoped he would avoid the injured list.

“It was about as positive news today as we could have expected to get,” manager Buck Showalter said before the Mets’ 13-2 loss to the Padres in the series finale.

Alonso said he had a swollen hand, compared it to the injury he suffered last May and played with fewer results. Alonso would not rule out an IL stint for this one, saying the situation should provide more clarity over the next day or two.
