Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola’s playing career ended with a brief stint at Mexican side Dorados de Sinaloa and Eliseo ‘Chevo’ Martinez has recalled the great generosity of the Manchester City coach. The club are back in the news this week after one of the game’s iconic figures Diego  Maradona agreed a deal to take over as new coach.

Martinez, who currently works on security at their home stadium, was tasked with assisting Guardiola during his short time in Mexico. “When he arrived, I didn’t know who he was and then I started to check and saw him and noticed he was from another level as his way of touching the ball was so impressive,” Martinez told ESPN.

“Pep was very generous. I remember he gave me envelopes with money so that I could give them to people from the club who had helped him. “I remember that a boy gave him 500 pesos and he told him that with what they gave he would go see him play and I explained that it was not an offence because Pep did not know how to take that answer.”

Even as a player at the end of playing days, Guardiola was also extremely focused on analysing the game and was already plotting his foray into coaching.
