The Penn Relay (also Penn Relay Carnival) is the oldest and largest track and field competition in the United States, held annually by the University of Pennsylvania at Franklin Field in Philadelphia since April 21, 1895. In 2012, 116 events were run at the meeting. More athletes run in the Penn Relay than at any other track and field meet in the world. It regularly attracts more than 15,000 participants from high schools, colleges, and track clubs throughout North America and abroad, Jamaica, in particular, competes in over 300 events over five days. Historically, the event has been credited with popularizing the relay race. It is held during the last full week in April, ending on the last Saturday in April. Attendance is generally above 100,000 over the past three days, and has been known to cross 50,000 on Saturdays. Penn Riley also hosts a Catholic youth organization night for Catholic middle schools in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The preliminaries are run on Tuesdays during Carnival Week, and the finals are run on Fridays.

We are happy to be able to offer all this information, but the most interesting aspect is that the race results will be posted to the web site in real time. The fact that results will be available almost immediately is extremely exciting. In addition to race results, the Web site will provide event information and a link to information on local restaurants, accommodation, transportation and parking.
The Penn Relay, which has been held continuously since 1895, will be held April 23-27. More than 100,000 athletes from all 50 states and 35 countries have competed in the Penn Relay over the past 10 years. The age of the contestants ranges from less than 10 years to over 80 years of age.

Attention all high school track and field coaches—the deadline to enter the 121st Penn Relay, which will run from April 23-25 at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, is Monday, March 30.

How Do High School Teams Qualify for the Penn Relay?

Relay teams should be admitted only if they have achieved the following performances at the 2015 Official Meet. Individual event performance must be achieved during the 2015 season, except for the 400h, discus and javelin, which can be achieved in 2014. All scores must be scored in meetings between at least five schools. Points not easily verifiable in the national track.
2022 registration
March 15, 2022 Spectators for the 2022 Penn Relay will no longer be required to show the University’s daily symptom check, proof of vaccination from PenOpen Campus, or a daily green pass for campus visitors to gain entry through designated fan entrances . Masks are not required to be worn indoors, but spectators should be welcome to wear masks indoors and out, as they feel comfortable. Viewers should continue to monitor their health symptoms daily and not attend the 2022 Penn Relay if they feel ill.
Any further updates to spectator policies that may affect the 2022 Penn Relay health and safety guidelines will be based on four COVID-19 response levels created by the City of Philadelphia. These can fluctuate before and during the event.
