Paul George’s tibia fracture shows us a very rare, but devastating basketball injury.

While I’m sure some people were actually watching the USA Basketball Intrasquad scrimmage game live last week, many of you have undoubtedly seen the now horrifying video footage of the Indiana Pacers, Paul George jamming his foot into the base of the backboard stanchion. turned, causing their tibia, or bone of the lower leg, to snap and twist at a 90-degree angle.

Elbow

LA Clippers star swingman Paul George was ruled out on Wednesday night with a right elbow injury ahead of his 114-111 win against the Boston Celtics.

George was originally listed as a suspect and went through a pregame warm-up before he was dropped.

Veteran forward Nicolas Batum returned after missing nine straight games and replaced George in the starting lineup. Batum was in health and safety protocol before being back on the ramp with his conditioning to play again. He remained without a score during 15 minutes of play in the win, before leaving with a right ankle injury.

With Kawhi Leonard (knee) out indefinitely, George has led the Clippers this season with 25 points per game, 7.3 rebounds and 5.4 assists. He had 21 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals in 39 minutes during Monday’s 102-90 win over the Blazers.

Leg injury

Paul sustained an open (also called compound) fracture of both his tibia and fibula, and had incisional surgery to repair it. An open fracture means that the bones penetrate the skin, and are exposed to outside air. This increases the risk of infection compared to a closed fracture. His surgery involved cleaning the leg wounds, and then his surgeon inserted a titanium rod into the tibia. The tibia is a very strong bone, but only the outer part of the bone is strong; The inside of our bones, where the marrow is, is actually quite soft. So, his surgeon made an incision just below the knee, made a small hole in the bone at the top of the tibia, and inserted a rod about the size of your little finger, the entire length of the tibia. To further stabilize the fracture, he probably also inserted additional screws through the bone and rod at the top and bottom of the brake.

Will play today

The LA Clippers take on the Utah Jazz today, and we’re not quite sure how healthy we’ll be. Paul George and Nicholas Batum are both suspects, and it would be tough to play without them both, given that Kawhi Leonard is definitely still out for the season.

Paul George and Nicholas Batum are both suspects, and it would be tough to play without them both, given that Kawhi Leonard is definitely still out for the season.

However, The Clippers beat one of the two best teams in basketball at the Phoenix Suns on Monday without either of those three. Jazz will be a tough matchup as well, and it will be on the road. The Jazz (19–7) is one of four teams with a better record than the Clips (16–12).
