After giving her a rose and a Valentine’s Day card the following year, the pair’s friendship grew into something more. Throughout their time in high school, the athletes rooted for each other—Mahomes played both football and baseball, while Matthews was a soccer star—and dated each other to dance in the gym.
The teenage lovers went to separate colleges, but the two stayed in Texas, which helped keep their relationship alive.
