On 22 April 2004, Pat Tillman was tragically killed by enemy fire during an ambush on a road off the Pakistan border. In addition to Tillman, an Afghan Allied soldier was killed, and two other people were injured in Tillman’s platoon.
Tillman’s death shocked the sports world and a nation. With his former teammate at Arizona State and the Arizona Cardinals, quarterback Jake Plummer called his friend at Tillman’s memorial service.

Tillman was very committed to his high school Sweetheart, whom he married just before he was admitted to the Army Rangers, Marie Ugenti Tillman.
Marie and Pat met at Leyland High School in Fremont, California – Pat was a star football player and Mary was a cheerleader. While Pat pursued her football scholarship at ASU, Mary noted and graduated with honors at the University of California, Santa Barbara, later working in marketing and production for The Arizona Republic and ESPN.
Shortly before Pat enlisted in the US Army, the couple married.
Hall of Fame
The first Arizona State player to be named as the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year, Pat Tillman is the sixth Sun Devil for the College Football Hall of Fame. In the two-time first-team Academic All-Pack 10 selection, Tillman earned the 1996 Pac-10 title to the Sun Devils and a berth in the Rose Bowl.
Despite the lack of attention, there was no denying that the 5-foot-11-inch Tillman produced an impressive college resume. Tillman led the Sun Devils defensively in 1997 after recording a team-high 93 tackles, registering four sacks, and losing in three receptions.
