Entering its new season at the Yukon, sports publications described the Buyers as the program’s most talked-about recruit since Brenna Stewart in 2012. Unlike Stewart and other former UConn stars, she was the leader of her team from the start of her college career. Megan Walker, UConn’s top scorer from the previous year, opted to skip her senior season to enter the 2020 WNBA Draft, leaving the 2020–21 squad with no seniors. The Buyers were unanimously voted the Big East Precision Freshman of the Year by the league’s coaches.

“I think the most impressive thing about Page is that she plays at the same pace throughout the game. It usually comes a little later for most players, but she’s got it at such a young age. Slows down the game for her. I’m always surprised when she shoots and she doesn’t move in.”

At one point, the 6-foot guard scored eight consecutive OT points for the Huskies, perfectly handling the game when Geno Auriemma’s squad needed him the most.

“Literally I was thinking, we have Paige Bueckers, and they don’t,” UConn senior Christine Williams recalled thinking during the final stages of the game.

“I mean, once she makes one, the rim gets so big,” she said, spreading her arms out in the shape of a giant hoop. “She’ll just keep making them. So just keep giving her the ball.”
