Alexander Mikhailovich Ovechkin (born 17 September 1985) is a Russian professional ice hockey left winger and captain of the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL). Often known as “Ovi” (alternately spelled “Ovie”) and “the Great Eight”, Ovechkin is widely considered to be one of the greatest ice hockey players of all time. Ovechkin began his professional career with Dynamo Moscow of the Russian Superleague, playing there for four seasons from 2001 until 2005 and returning briefly during the 2012–13 NHL lockout. A highly touted prospect, Ovechkin was selected by the Capitals first overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

Injury
Alex Ovechkin looked good Tuesday during his first time back on the ice and fully participated in the Capitals’ morning skate on Wednesday, taking rushes on his normal spot on the first line. Everything points to Ovechkin playing in tonight’s season opener against the New York Rangers, but the man himself (or should we say machine?) was less confident. When asked if he was a game-time decision, Ovechkin told reporters, “Yeah, you can write that on the Twitter.”
As for the injury itself, Ovechkin says that it feels “pretty good” now, but would not reveal what he was rehabbing, joking “my pinky toe get hurt.” Ovechkin initially got injured during Friday’s preseason finale after he landed a big hit on Flyers forward Travis Konecny. He hobbled off the ice, did not return to the game, and didn’t return to the ice until four days later.

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin was not on the ice for practice on Sunday and is being considered day-to-day with a lower-body injury he suffered against the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday.
The incident occurred when Ovechkin skated into Flyers forward Travis Konecny and fell to the ice during the first period. He didn’t put much weight on his left leg upon getting up, but was able to get himself off the ice and did not return.
